Dan Gray (2009)

Vice President

Urban Ecology Center

I grew up in West Lafayette, Indiana, on the Wabash River. Through my dad and Boy Scouts I spent a lot of time canoeing on the Wabash and Tippecanoe rivers, Wildcat Creek, and Sugar Creek. I received a degree in history, studied church history and theology, and taught high school social studies in Indianapolis, South Bend and St. Paul. In St Paul, in addition to history and government, I team taught environmental classes and coordinated the outdoor wilderness portion of the curriculum. In March of 2002, I moved to Milwaukee to be closer to my son who lives in Waukesha.
I currently work at the Urban Ecology Center as its Urban Adventures Coordinator. This position includes leading canoe trips on the Milwaukee River, teaching rock climbing, assisting with environmental education classes at the center, and coordinating the River Connection Program which we offer in partnership with Riveredge Nature Center and Pier Wisconsin. Through camping and hiking I developed a deep respect for the outdoors and the environment. Through my time spent in education, I have worked to pass on that respect and to develop an awareness of ecology and how we impact the world around us.

Eddee Daniel (2009)

Marquette University High School
I have been an art teacher at Marquette University High School for over 25 years, specializing in photography and architecture. I received my B.S. in Art Education from U.W.--Madison in 1976 and my M.S. in Art Education from UWM in 1985. My teaching experience has also included adjunct positions at U.W.--Waukesha, Carroll College, and Mount Mary College. I have been an active photographer, with exhibitions from Washington, D.C. to Washington State and have won numerous awards. I am currently working on a photo book about the Menomonee River Watershed entitled Urban Wilderness, in collaboration with FMR and six other Milwaukee area organizations.

Brian Adams (2008)

Nancy Aten (2007)

Land Steward

I’m a tree-hugger, designer, and optimist, and work toward something Maya Angelou wrote: “when you learn, teach. When you get, give”. A former engineer and software developer, I've realigned my work with my ecological passions... I recently completed four years of studying ecologically-based landscape architecture in Georgia, where I helped develop alternative stormwater management plans for the city there, and worked on local watershed issues. I now work independently in Milwaukee; I also serve on the boards of Wild Ones and the Door County Land Trust, teach Environmental Literacy at MIAD, and love to go on botanizing walks.

Shirley Jeffrey

Honorary Board Member Emerita

I have been a member since the organization's infancy. I bring to the river my life experiences (I was a psychotherapist working with the dying and the grieving).  I have been photographing the river for 18 years. The river has been a healing presence in my life; hence, I have become a dedicated advocate for the river. I want to share my deep love of the river with others and hope that others will be reminded of the importance of rivers in their lives as well as in the life of the planet.

Ann Brummitt

Milwaukee River Work Group Coordinator

I joined the FMR staff as the coordinator for the Milwaukee River Work Group. The effort to protect the Milwaukee River via an overlay zone began in early 2006. You may have heard of this corridor referred to as Milwaukee’s Central Park. Working with FMR, Urban Ecology Center, and River Revitalization Foundation, we hatched a plan to get city zoning protections in place for the river. I spent the year being a part-time environmentalist from 3-5 pm and a French teacher by day. I am happy to report that I am now on an extended leave of absence and can devote all of my energies to the river. I’ve been living and teaching in the Milwaukee area for the last 18 years. I did my graduate work in French at UWM and undergrad in French and Plant Pathology at UW-Madison. I taught French in the Elmbrook Public Schools for 15 years. In my spare time I am probably watching my kid’s soccer games, running, or biking. I am also proud to say that I bring a pretty decent J stroke as part of my skill set to FMR.
