More PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) were found in a sewer under Mitchell Park. One has to wonder how many times this story will repeat itself before these persistent chemicals are finally gone.

Project RED training a success

On Saturday August 15th, the River Alliance of Wisconsin provided training to educate local volunteers in identifying and documenting the distribution of invasive species that threaten Wisconsin waterways. Milwaukee Riverkeeper and Trout Unlimited helped to host this event at the Wauwatosa Public Library. We learned how to identify 15 different invasive species that threaten the biodiversity in Wisconsin waterways.

It was a pleasure padding with people from around the state at our 2009 Milky Moonlight paddle.  About 25 of us launched from the rowing club at dusk.

Menomonee River Trip

Good times had by all who came to the BYOC last Saturday, July 25th.  We went canoeing down the industrial canals of the Menomonee River and fought the mighty weekend wind.  It was brutal, but if I had to pick a winner I'd say it was us.

Milwaukee River dam in Grafton to be removed

Don Behm from the Journal Sentinel wrote an article about the Lime Kiln dam in Grafton being removed with federal economic recovery act funds through NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).  The $4.7 million project will create 174 temporary jobs and will reconnect 14,000 acres of wetlands.  The removal of the dam will allow fish to swim 35 miles upstream in the main river, 11 more miles in the North Branch and 112 miles of tributary streams.

July 18th River Cleanup

 Just wanted to let everyone know that our next river cleanup will be Saturday July 18th from 9am-noon.  This river cleanup will be taking place on the South Side- but the exact location is yet to be determined. So please mark your calenders!  The location will be put up on our website and Facebook asap!  Happy Summer!
