Come Out and Support Milwaukee's Central Park

April 28, 2010

Milwaukee Riverkeeper and our partners on the Milwaukee River Work Group have been continuing to work hard on passing the Milwaukee River Greenway Overlay District legislation, which will protect over 8 miles of river, floodplain, and riverfront habitat from the former North Avenue Dam to Silver Spring Road.

UPDATE: Step 2 of 4 is complete for the creation of the Milwaukee River Greenway Overlay Zone!  Stricter stormwater regulations for the overlay have passed the public works committee.

This week,  two ordinances and a resolution representing the map, forestry provisions, and the design standards go before ZND or the Zoning, Neighborhoods, and Development Committee on Tuesday, May 18.  The agenda is attached.  The items are scheduled for consideration at 9:15 in room 301B of City Hall.   Good turnout and testimony in favor of the overlay is important at this committee meeting.

If the ordinances pass, the Milwaukee River Greenway overlay will be considered for approval at the Common Council meeting on May 25.  No agenda yet but the meeting begins at 9am at City Hall.

Thanks for everyone's hard work and support!

Upcoming Meetings

We need friends and members to come to several City meetings coming up in the next month to support creation of this Overlay District.  They are at the following times/days:

  • Public Works (storm water and forestry files): Wednesday, May 12th at 9 AM at 301B, Milwaukee City Hall.

  • Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development (overlay file): Tuesday, May 18th, 9 AM at 301B, Milwaukee City Hall.

  • Common Council (final approval of all files): Tuesday, May 25th, 9 AM at 3rd Floor Common Council Chambers, Milwaukee City Hall.

Once approved by the Common Council, files are submitted to the Mayor for signature and are "official" one day after passage and publication by the City Clerk.
