Fox 6 Covers KK Concrete Removal

September 28, 2010

Fox 6 News recently covered the more than $4M of Great Lakes Restoration funding that will be used to help remove the concrete channel that lines the Kinnickinnic River.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is glad to see the channel being removed so that a more natural river can be flowing in its place.

WITI - The White House announced that Milwaukee is getting more than $4M to help improve the creeks and river that feed Lake Michigan. The money is part of the Great Lakes Restoration Grants, a $475M project to improve the environment of all the great lakes. In Milwaukee, the money is being used to remove concrete that lines the Kinnickinnic River.

The concrete was installed in the 1960's, but officials say they now know it is bad for the environment and does a poor job of flood management. The changes will make it look more like a natural waterway, provide more habitat, and make it a positive feature for the community.

Work to remove the concrete is scheduled to start next spring, and should take about a year to complete.
