VICTORY: Waterkeeper Alliance Prevails in Lawsuit to Abate Toxic Emissions from Power Plants

October 23, 2009

Today the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agreed to adopt rules to reduce toxic emissions from coal and oil fired power plants by November 11, 2001.  The EPA's action results in settlement of a lawsuit brought by Waterkeeper Alliance and other environmental organizations in December 2009.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is extremely pleased with the outcome of the case.  Coal fired power plants have been poisoning our air and watersheds with mercury contamination for years, putting children and women of childbearing age at great risk, and resulting in fish advisories warning of mercury contamination in all 50 states, including Wisconsin.

The new rules will result in deep cuts in mercury emissions, as well as other toxic pollutants.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, an international coaltion dedicated to protecting and restoring our nation's waterways.

Attached is the press release announcing settlement of the lawsuit.
