The .357 String Band performance benefits FMR

What do you get when you combine street punk, bluegrass and the Milwaukee River? The .357 String Band, Milwaukee’s first and only “Streetgrass” band, performing live to raise funds for Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers.
On Saturday, February 25th, The .357 String Band performed in front of a capacity crowd at Bar LuLu in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers. Close to $1,000 was generated, both from free will donations and from the sale of five featured beers.
“We’ve done shows in the past to benefit cancer victims and victims of domestic violence,” says Derek Dunn, guitarist for the band. “We wanted to do a show for an ecological nonprofit, and we picked Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers because they’re a green organization with some teeth.”
Starting off the evening was Rev500, Milwaukee’s premier instrumental surf band. What better way to celebrate Wisconsin watersheds’ lakes, rivers and wetlands than with a band dedicated to the sounds of surf?
When The .357 String Band hit the stage, it marked their first Milwaukee appearance since late 2005. Bar LuLu was filled to capacity before the show started, with a line of people eagerly awaiting entrance outside. John Jansen, Outreach Director of Community Shares, was in attendance.
“Their raw energy was like the Beatles in Hamburg,” says Jansen, “all bedlam broke loose.”
Paul Kennedy from Bar LuLu said that the night “was easily a top ten night in our two year history as a full bar. When artists, business' and groups like FMR work hand in hand, not only do you raise some cash but you raise awareness.”
Information on Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers was available at the show, as well as The Milwaukee Urban Watertrail Map. One person even joined Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers membership at the show.
Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers would like to extend special thanks to Bar LuLu, as well as the following brewers for supporting the benefit: Ken Limas from Kalamazoo Brewing, Paul Moebius of Lakefront Brewery, Don" Wambo" Wambach of Sprecher Brewing, and Brian Loughry of Hacker-Pschorr.
The .357 String Band’s next Milwaukee appearance will be Saturday, March 18th at the Points East Pub.

FMR Launches Citizen-based Water Monitoring Pilot Study
FMR is currently recruiting volunteers within the Milwaukee River Basin to be part of a citizen-based water quality monitoring study. Citizens will be trained at one of three monitoring levels depending on previous experience, and will be provided with equipment. The goal of the study is to produce a wealth of water quality information throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. The information will be collected by citizen volunteers and compiled into a large online database, with the intent that water quality data will be used by the Wisconsin DNR for decision-making and management. The database will also be available to the public and river conservation groups for analysis of water quality trends and to prioritize projects in the Basin. We expect to hold two introductory level trainings this spring, and one advanced level training for volunteers that have at least one year of previous water quality monitoring experience. Advanced level training will be facilitated by DNR and River Alliance of Wisconsin staff. Contact us to learn more about becoming a citizen water monitor at (414) 287-0207 ext. 28 or 29.
