FMR to Rock Summerfest
Friends of
Milwaukee's Rivers will be promoting its clean water efforts July 9
as special guests of the rock group Counting Crows. The West Coast
band regularly invites groups involved in environmental, domestic
violence and HIV/AIDS issues to distribute information at their
concerts.
FMR was selected
by the Crows lead singer Adam Duritz for the July 9 gig at the
Marcus Amphitheatre, says FMR outreach coordinator Laura Maker. Duritz
will acknowledge the efforts of FMR from the stage during the show
as well.
The Counting
Crows have been recognizing community activist groups at their shows
since 1996. This is the first time FMR has taken the stage.

Volunteers Needed for the Health of It
The Friends of
Milwaukee's Rivers will be the featured July recipient of the
Outpost Natural Foods Co-op's "One Percent Wednesdays," where the
Co-op donates 1% of its Wednesday proceeds to a community activist
group such as FMR. FMR received $2,933.15 from the Co-op during the
December "One Percent Wednesday" effort.
As part of being
recognized for its community work, FMR can also man tables and
distribute literature every Wednesday at the three Co-op stores: 100
E. Capitol Dr.; 7000 W. State St. and 2826 S. Kinnickinnic. FMR
needs volunteers to staff the tables for the July drive. The stores'
most active time of the day is during the lunch hour, which is where
we can reach the most people quickly, but anyone interested in
putting 90 minutes or two hours talking up FMR will be welcome to do
it anytime. The stores are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you're
interested in spreading the word, contact Outreach Coordinator Laura
Maker at 414.287.0207 ext. 28, or

Riverkeeper Boat launched

Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers’ brand new
17 foot Riverkeeper vessel navigated the water of the Milwaukee
River for the first time Thursday, as a small crowd of onlookers
witnessed the boat’s official launching.
The boat was purchased with funds that are a part of a 2004
settlement between The Sierra Club, represented by Midwest
Environmental Advocates, and Cintas Corporation, and will aid
Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers in their mission to guard the
Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic Rivers from abuse, and to
educate the public on water issues.
“This boat will be a huge help to us,” said Cheryl Nenn, Riverkeeper
for Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers. “not only will it be used to
respond to citizen calls about pollution violations or to
investigate shoreline areas for pollution and erosion, it will help
with trash removal during our cleanups, and with our new citizen
water quality monitoring program with the DNR.”
“It’s extremely gratifying to see this moment realized,” said Lynn
Broaddus, executive director for Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers.
“We’ve been working towards this goal since 1999; this boat is
really going to help us be the eyes and ears of the river.”
Slip space along the Milwaukee River was donated by Performance
Yachts Services, where the launching took place.
