Friends of Milwaukee's
Rivers issues notice of intent to sue Fontarome
On Wednesday, December
19, 2007, Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers, though its attorneys at Midwest Environmental Advocates, sent a notice of intent to sue
under the Clean Water Act
to Fontarome Chemical, Inc. in response to their dumping
of excessive amounts of toxic and cancer-causing chemicals into the
Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District
sewer system. This is a problem for area waters because MMSD's system is
not designed to remove these toxic chemicals, and relies upon companies
like Fontarome to not release them into the system.
Friends of Milwaukee's
Rivers is concerned that Fontarome's excessive chemical discharges will
negatively affect rivers and streams, degrading aquatic habitat and
posting a threat to human health. The full press release may be found
here.

Milwaukee River Greenway
Community Workshops Update
In October and November,
three community workshops were held by the Milwaukee River Work Group
(MRWG), and the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning's design
center, Community Design Solutions, to gather public input on the
proposed Milwaukee River Greenway. Over 130 local citizens attended the
workshops and submitted many recommendations for the usage and
management of the corridor. Participants overwhelmingly supported
the essential elements of the Greenway which would stretch along the
banks and bluffs of the river from the North Avenue footbridge to the City limits at Silver Spring Drive. The plan would improve
wildlife habitat, water quality, preservation of native plant species, and public
access, as well as provide a protected "viewshed" via municipal zoning
regulations for new development along the river bluff. MRWG will meet this
winter with the City
and others to begin negotiations on the final overlay district. The full
press release and public input statistics may be found
here [PDF]. For more
information on the Milwaukee River Greenway, visit the MRWG
website, or contact
