Milwaukee's Central Park Photo Contest
Sponsored by the Urban Ecology Center Photo Club

The Milwaukee
river corridor between North Avenue and Silver Spring Drive is the
focus of an ongoing Photography Contest.
The Urban
Ecology Center Photography Club will be sponsoring a contest for all
ages and experience levels to draw attention to what is being dubbed
as “Milwaukee’s
Central Park.”
This area along the Milwaukee River has long been neglected. It has
recently become an area of focus for three local organizations:
Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers, The Urban Ecology Center, and the
River Revitalization Foundation, as well as other interested
agencies, business and individuals. Together they form the
Milwaukee
River Work Group, an organization whose vision is to create a
central park along the Milwaukee River upstream of North Avenue to
Silver Spring Drive. Their goals also include preservation of the
wild aspect of the natural area, improved water quality and public
access, as well as the creation of a “viewshed” that would regulate
development along the river’s edge. All of which would culminate in
a permanently protected central park.
The Urban Ecology Center Photography Club is sponsoring a contest to
draw more people into this “central park” area, creating more
interest and awareness of the proposals set forth by the Milwaukee
River Work Group as well as experiencing a little used recreational
area in the middle of the city. The contest will be open to all ages
in three experience levels: Adult Professional, Adult Amateur, and
Youth under 15 years old, and will feature three categories: Human
Interest, Nature (Landscapes and Wildlife), and Abstract.
