Milwaukee River Corridor Project

In its 1997 Natural Areas Plan, the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) identified 447 key remaining natural areas in southeastern Wisconsin.  More than 25 percent of these natural areas are in the Milwaukee River Watershed.  The SEWRPC Plan also identified environmental corridors, and highlighted their importance in maintaining watershed health and wildlife habitat.  Milwaukee Riverkeeper embraces the SEWRPC Plan because it speaks to our overall goals to restore, protect, and conserve the Milwaukee River Basin.

West Bend Wetlands Preservation

Sometimes, protecting the rivers is more about what happens next to them, rather than directly in them. That's certainly the case with the West Bend Airport, which sits on the north side of the Milwaukee River, just east of the city of West Bend. Expansion of this airport, as has been proposed, would require moving Hwy 33, and destroying or degrading nearly 150 acres of high quality wetlands along the river.

Going with the Flow - Stormwater Education Program

In 2006, Milwaukee Riverkeeper organized Going with the Flow, a stormwater education program for Milwaukee public schools.  The program taught youth aged 10-15 about their impact on the rivers through storm runoff.  Going with the Flow was funded by the City of Milwaukee.

Johnson's Park Stormwater Demonstration

Stormwater runoff is one of the largest sources of nonpoint pollution in Milwaukee and throughout the United States. Polluted runoff from our streets, roofs and yards rushes into our rivers and Lake Michigan either directly or through stormwater sewer systems.
