In 2006, FMR launched Going with the
Flow, a stormwater education program for Milwaukee
public schools. The program teaches youth, ages
10-15, about their impact on the rivers through storm
runoff. Going with the Flow is funded by
the City of Milwaukee.
• Students learn how pollutants in the storm drain
system contaminate Milwaukee’s drinking water.
• Students learn that pollutants in the rivers and lake
can harm the fish and other organisms that
live in the water as well as
the humans who use the water for fishing, boating and
swimming.
• Students realize the importance of green-space and
learn how soil and roots from plants and trees act as
filters and sponges to absorb chemical pollutants that
would otherwise flow into the rivers and lake.
• Students learn how they can contribute to keeping
Milwaukee’s urban watersheds clean.
In 2006, over 2,400
students in 28 schools throughout
Milwaukee completed the program.
The 16th Street Community Health Clinic has translated
the “Going with the Flow” learning materials into
Spanish and will give the presentation to bilingual
students in the coming months.
