Great Lakes Compact support sample letter

Dear Senator/Representative,

I have never been as concerned about threats to Great Lakes waters as I am right now.

Last month, the Governors of Florida, Alabama, and Georgia met in Tallahassee to discuss how to solve their ‘water war". For nearly two decades, they have spent millions of dollars fighting over water.

When you think about how important water is in other parts of the country, it really hits home how fortunate we are here on the Great Lakes, which contain 20% of the earth’s fresh surface water and support over 40 million people. It also demonstrates how attractive the Great Lakes are becoming to other, drier parts of the country.

At a time when water levels in Lake Michigan are at their lowest, the southeast is seeing record-breaking droughts, and the idea of sharing Great Lakes waters is included in presidential campaign speeches, we need to make sure there are strong protections in place for the waters of the Great Lakes. If water leaves the Great Lakes basin, it does not come back, and it will change the Lakes forever.

Wisconsin needs a Strong Great Lakes Compact that protects the Lakes from water diversions, exploitation by multi-national bottled water companies, and wasteful water use. If the southeast gets their act together before we do, we may be the solution to their water wars.

It is clear we need Wisconsin water to remain in Wisconsin. I urge you to endorse the Strong Great Lakes Basin Compact and follow through with appropriate legislation.

Thank you.

 Sincerely,
