Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers asks
you to support a Strong Great Lakes Compact
At a time when
water levels in Lake Michigan are at their lowest, the southeast
is seeing record-breaking droughts, and the idea of sharing
Great Lakes water is included in presidential campaign speeches,
we need to ensure there are strong protections in place for
Wisconsin’s unique resource. If water leaves the Great Lakes
basin, it does not come back, and it will change the Great Lakes
forever.
Commissioners
from the eight Great Lakes states have drafted a Great Lakes
Basin Compact that protects the lakes from water diversions,
exploitation by multi-national bottled water companies, and
wasteful water use. In Wisconsin, we would like to see a Strong
Great Lakes Compact ratified and enforced to cover any loopholes
left by the Compact. The Compact is not binding until ratified
by the legislatures of each Great Lakes State and approved by
the U.S. Congress.
Several
politicians have not yet formally endorsed the Compact. By
encouraging State Senator Alberta Darling (District 8), and
State Representatives Jon Richards (District 19) and Sheldon
Wasserman (District 22) to support a Strong Compact, you can
help ensure that Wisconsin water stays in Wisconsin.
